Why do children and their families work with an Occupational Therapist?

Occupational therapy helps children develop independent living skills and participate to the best of their ability in everyday activities.

Here are some examples of what we do

 

Sensory Processing

Response to and discrimination of touch, sound, taste, smell, sight and movement; body awareness such as over reaction to noise, hypersensitivity to touch.

Perception

Recognising and copying shapes, visual memory. These skills are essential for reading and writing.

Organisational Skills

Planning, problem solving, attention and concentration. These skills are essential to manage learning, homework and reach academic goals.

 

Emotional Skills

Self-regulation, self-esteem, coping skills.

Motor Coordination Skills

Running, jumping, body coordination; using hands to manipulate objects/toys, pencil skills. Motor skills are essential to manage self-care independently.
